LPPM AD 2.22   Flight procedures

The submission of FPL to Faro ATS is mandatory before departing, complying the the following time of submission:

  • VFR flights within national airspace -30 MIN before ETD
  • VFR flights within Schengen airspace - 60 MIN before ETD
  • IFR flights - 60 MIN before ETD
  • Night VFR flights not allowed

Approach surface protruded by buildings and terrain elevation. Flight operation in the aerodrome vicinity is conditioned to good visibility. Engine start up approval must be previously requested to the ATS provider in Portimão AD.Taxiing and take-off is not allowed while a parachute jumping activity is taking place at Portimão AD. Entry into Portimão ATZ is conditioned while a parachute jumping activity is taking place.

Transfer of Communication and Responsibility

Aircraft with destination LPPM in contact with TWRFAR

The aircraft with destination LPPM are allowed to leave Faro APP/Faro TWR frequencies and contact Portimão AFIS, on the following conditions:

  • VFR Rules - After reporting (or Radar confirmation) of any of the geographical points or abeam: Carvoeiro, Silves, Caldas de Monchique, Barragem da Bravura/Odiáxere, Lagos (see Visual Approach Chart);
  • IFR Rules - good meteorological conditions:
    • Initial descent to MSA (5000 FT);
    • Pilot reports VFR and proceed descent, or;
    • Report in visual contact with LPPM AD and with clearance for visual approach.
  • IFR Rules - adverse meteorological conditions:
    • Proceed to the last point IFR en route and descent to a safe altitude;
    • Authorised to an instrument approach procedure published for LPFR, in order to find conditions that allow to fly VFR to LPPM AD.

Alternatively, the aircraft may be allowed to descend to the minimum sector altitude (radius de 25 NM from DVOR/DME “VFA”).

Aircraft departing from LPPM

Aircraft taking off from LPPM should contact Faro APP (or Faro TWR when previously agreed), to leave the traffic circuit pattern or before overflying or abeam Carvoeiro, Silves, Caldas de Monchique, Barragem da Bravura/Odiáxere, Lagos defined as transfer points for communication and responsibility to a maximum altitude of 1000 FT AGL. Aircraft which the cruising level is higher than FL 055 should be coordinated with Faro TWR.

NOTE: Depending on traffic, and when previously coordinated by Faro TWR, Portimão Aerodrome and Lisboa ACC:

  • The traffic leaving LPPM, which route determines the transfer to Lisboa ACC, may be exempted from contact with Faro APP;
  • The traffic with LPPM destination may be exempted to contact Faro APP and directly contact the Aerodrome.

Local Flights

Local flights in LPPM and vicinity, not exceeding the point of responsibility transfer, as defined above, and a maximum altitude of 1000 FT AGL (lower TMA limit), should be in permanent contact with Portimão AFIS.

Overflight in contact with TWRFAR

Aircraft in VFR overflying LPPM vicinity, at an altitude below 2000 FT AGL, should be instructed by Faro APP or Faro TWR to contact Portimão AFIS for traffic information;After passing Portimão area, AFIS should instruct the aircraft to contact again Faro APP or Faro TWR. If under conditions of above NOTE (paragraph - Aircraft departing from LPPM), may be directly transferred to ACC LIS.

Emergency Coordination Procedures

In case of medical or another emergency that enables to send the FPL to the ARO of Faro, the aircraft intending to take off from LPPM should enter SSR 7000 code and contact Faro APP/TWR, when instructed by AFIS. The aircraft should not climb above 1000 FT AGL. The aircraft should contact Faro TWR providing AFIL data in order to be relayed to Faro ARO for processing.LPPM AFIS, directly or through the pilot responsible for operation should coordinate with Faro TWR (Phone: 289 894 137 or 289 894 163) as soon as possible, emergency operations, fire fighting or other, involving one or more aircrafts.Faro TWR will support, to the extent possible, the wildfire operations or other emergency situations. Aircraft departing from LPPM, for aerial work activities (e.g. parachuting, aerial photography, television reports, banner towing advertising), should be under previously coordination by AITA with Faro TWR.It is mandatory the use of wheels by helicopters when entering the platform for refuelling purposes.It is mandatory the use of reflective jackets for those who circulate on the apron.
